From November 30 to December 1, 2024, the 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Pickleball Invitational Tournament and the 1st Olympic Wheelchair Pickleball Demonstration Tournament were grandly held at the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Pickleball Court. This year’s event attracted 28 teams from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and the number of participants exceeded 500, demonstrating the booming development of pickleball in the Greater Bay Area.
This tournament has junior, youth, adult and wheelchair categories. The competition among eight teams of players from Macau, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Hengqin, Zhaoqing and Dongguan is particularly fierce, especially in the youth category. The format of the competition includes men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. It adopts a best-of-three sets system, with four teams in each group playing in a single round-robin.
Although the two groups of Hong Kong young players A and B failed in the preliminary round thus entering the knockout stage in second place in the group, their morale was greatly boosted upon the coach's reminders and encouragement. In the end, they both defeated their opponents in the semi-finals and joined hands to advance to the final rounds. Ultimately, the Hong Kong coaches Mr. Yip Wing Ho and Mr. Lam Wai Lun won the Outstanding Coach Award, while outstanding players Lai Yik Shun, Chik Yan Ki and Chan Kwong Leung also won the Best Player Award. The Hong Kong team, led by the team leader, Principal Ho Tik Shun and PE Head Mr. Chan Kwok Leung, finally won the championship and the 1st runner-up of the youth group, as well as the 1st runner-up of the wheelchair demonstration tournament.
Looking at this competition, the Macau team in the adult group has improved rapidly, showing strong competitiveness. Cities in the Greater Bay Area are also actively training young players with surging number of participants continually, injecting new impetus into the development of pickleball. With the active promotion of relevant groups in Macau, the development of wheelchair pickleball players will become another key project worth looking forward to.
