CFSS Awarded "Carbon Neutral Model School" for Second Consecutive Year in Response to World Environment Day 2026
In response to “World Environment Day 2026” and UNESCO’s “Green Education Partnership” (GEP), the UNESCO Hong Kong Association (UHKA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development (HiESD) successfully held the “World Environment Day 2026 Hong Kong Action cum Carbon Neutral School Scheme Commendation Ceremony” on 5 Jun 2026. The event was recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the Hong Kong action for World Environment Day 2026.
At the ceremony, it was announced that UHKA and HiESD have been officially accredited by UNESCO as certification bodies for the GEP framework, a global guiding framework for education for sustainable development. The event also unveiled the “Hong Kong Green School Quality Standards (Trial Version)” and the “Hong Kong Progress Report on Carbon Neutral Schools,” bringing together representatives from the government, education sector, business community, and environmental organisations to witness a major milestone in Hong Kong’s environmental education and carbon neutrality practices.
The ceremony also presented “Carbon Neutral Model School” plaques to institutions that completed the “Carbon Neutral School Scheme” in the current academic year. The Chinese Foundation Secondary School (CFSS) is participating in the scheme for the second consecutive year. With the joint efforts of the principal, teachers, and students, the school successfully completed a series of training sessions and carbon audits, and analysed future directions and targets by comparing data from previous years.
The cross-sectoral forum was moderated by Dr. Fong Wai Hung, former Senior Curriculum Development Officer of the Hong Kong Education Bureau and current Senior Lecturer at HiESD. Panelists included Ms. Kwok Mei Hang, Chairperson of the Environmental Campaign Committee; Mr. Fung Wai Pong, General Manager of Advanced Building Technology at the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency; Mr. Ho Tik Shun, Principal of CFSS; and Ms. Cheung Chui Yee, Principal of Shatin Methodist College. They shared practical experiences in promoting carbon neutrality from the perspectives of policy, certification, school management, teaching, and community engagement.
This event marks the formal integration of Hong Kong schools’ climate actions with global green school standards and frameworks, while also reflecting the international recognition of Hong Kong’s “Carbon Neutral School Scheme.” Looking ahead, the Association and the Institute will continue to expand the scheme to more primary and secondary schools, deepening climate action from campuses to communities through teacher training, student carbon calculation teams, cross-school exchanges, and community participation, contributing hand in hand to both international and local carbon reduction goals.
