N Reasons for Reading: Practices and Explorations in Nationwide Reading Promotion

Our school was greatly honoured to invite Dr. Lee Ka-kui, Legislative Council Member and President of The Hong Kong Publishing Federation, to visit our campus on Thursday, 25 June, as a guest speaker for a special seminar titled "N Reasons for Reading: Practices and Explorations in Nationwide Reading Promotion." Dr. Lee delivered an insightful talk, beginning with the historical context of the "New Culture Movement" in China, and elaborating on how intellectuals such as Hu Shih and Lu Xun championed the "Vernacular Chinese Movement" to bridge the gap between language and the masses. This movement fundamentally transformed the way people thought and perceived the world, and laid the groundwork for knowledge to become the cornerstone of national strength. He emphasised that reading is not merely a matter of personal cultivation, but a vital driver of national rejuvenation and progress.

Following the lecture, Dr. Lee was warmly escorted by our students on a campus tour, with a special focus on the "Panda Library" and the "Director Xia Baolong’s Book Donation Corner" in the School Library. The students enthusiastically introduced the school's various reading promotion initiatives, including book clubs, author talks, cross-curricular reading programmes, and thematic book fairs, all designed to foster a vibrant reading culture on campus. Dr. Lee expressed his deep appreciation for the school's unwavering commitment to promoting reading among students, and encouraged everyone to continue embracing books as lifelong companions, making reading not only the starting point of lifelong learning, but also a beacon that illuminates the path ahead.
